While turfing can be done by anyone, our turfing service saves you the hassle of a day or two of hard work! If you still want to do it yourself though, here's a guide!
How can I lay turf?
Laying turf is fairly easy, just time-consuming! It's also easy to see the difference between an amateurly laid lawn and a professional one.
The best time to lay turfing is during the mid-Autumn when the soil is just the right temperature and moisture level and would require the least aftercare.
Firstly, you'd want to prepare the soil beneath, a few weeks in advance. You'll need to clear any weeds and cultivate the surface. Don't use residual weedkiller or it will remain in the soil and stop the turf from taking. The soil should be dug or rotovated to 8-10 inches. Dig in well-rotted manure and leave for a few weeks to settle.
Next, clear any weeds that have grown in that time, removing by hand. Level the soil by treading the area several times and raking several times in different directions, finally rake 2 oz per sq yd of fertiliser into the soil.
As soon as the turf is delivered, it should be laid down to prevent it weakening.
Start in one corner and work across the turf, so you're facing the bare soil of the turf. Also, work on boards to stop yourself from leaving footsteps on the fresh turf. Lay sods down with staggered joints, and butted together just like you'd see in a brick wall. Keep a bucket of soil handy in case you need to level some turf out.
